IP Weather Station project

Goal: Low cost, low power remote IP weather station

Requirements:

  • Cost effective (<= $200)
  • Low power consumption (<= 10 watts)
  • Low maintenance (>= 6 months uptime without on-site service call)
  • Near-realtime data (publish to external website <= 5 minute intervals)
  • Low bandwidth consumption (<= 500 MB / month)

Components

Platform: PogoPlug Pro P21 OXNAS, Arch Linux ARM 3.1.10-13, kernel 2.6.35.3-8, wview 5.20.2 with radlib 2.12.0, Ambient Weather WS-2080

Compatibility Notes: Shortest path appears to be PogoPlug-E02 with Debian 5 and wview.  There are turnkey solutions for loading Lenny on the E02.  With my P21 it turned out to be easier to run ALARM and compile wview from source.

Connectivity: WildBlue Value Package satellite internet

Sampling Rate and Sample Size

Example 1:  1 update / 5 minutes = 8,640 updates / month, 500 MB / month, 1 update = 59.3 KB

Example 2: 1 update / minute = 43,200 updates / month, 500 MB / month, 1 update = 11.9 KB

10/22/12 Roadblock #2:

Using Arch Linux ARM for OXNAS has gotten me much further but I’ve hit a hard stop.  Despite the fact that the PogoPlug V3 has only two physical interfaces (ethernet and USB), it appears that the USB support is only partial.  It appears that USB 1.1 HID devices (like USB weather stations) are not supported in the latest OXNAS build.  It seems pretty lame to have a server with USB ports that doesn’t have complete USB support.  This project would be easy if I’d spent the extra $30 or so for an E02 (Marvell Kirkwood, fully supported).  Maybe I can build proper USB support for the OXNAS platform, but that probably exceeds the time I can put into this..

Got the plug!  Here are my steps:

Power up and register:

  1. Unbox
  2. Connect power and ethernet
  3. Browse to my.pogoplug.com
  4. Click on Activate
  5. Enter an email address and password
  6. Continue through until the hard drive connect step
  7. Click on <account> -> Settings
  8. Click on Security
  9. Click on Enable SSH access
  10. Enter an SSH password twice

Backup the factory PogoPlug flash:

  1. Browse to router’s DHCP table and find PogoPlug’s IP address
  2. SSH to PogoPlug’s IP address: username root, password <what you just set>
  3. cd /tmp
  4. Plug in a USB thumb drive
  5. mkdir usb
  6. mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/usb
  7. wget http://mehl.co/files/nanddump
  8. chmod +x nanddump
  9. ./nanddump -nf usb/mtd0.oob /dev/mtd0
  10. ./nanddump -nf usb/mtd1.oob /dev/mtd1
  11. ./nanddump -nf usb/mtd2.oob /dev/mtd2

The backup is now done!  This took 54% of my 1GB thumb drive.

Prepare a disk for Debian Lenny:

  1. Find another thumb drive and plug it in

  4. d (delete partition – my thumb drive had one FAT 16 partition)
  5. n (new partition)

  6. Installer ran for a bit and bailed on: # Installing /sbin/mkswap…

    wget: server returned error: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
  7. Do a bunch of research.  Find out that I have a P21 (V3) with dual ARMv6 cores @ 700MHz (NOT the V2 PogoPlug with ARMv5).  Read about V3.  Read the install scripts.  Based on output, onboard uBoot was not overwritten (script bailed when it did not recognize existing uBoot).  Should be okay, probably not bricked.  Praise wise scripters with tight precondition validation.  Pull thumb drive.  Pull power.  Reconnect power.  Grab beer and hope I’m back to pre step 1) of the Install.  Read some more.  PogoPlug came back up (same IP), everything looks good.  Roadblock #1 encountered (non-fatal).

Roadblock #1:

The easy existing directions for loading Debian on a PogoPlug apply to V2 models (POGO-E02, POGO-E02G) with ARMv5.  I have a POGO-P21 V3 with ARMv6.  From ArchLinuxArm.org:

The SoC used in these models is not supported in the mainline Linux kernel, and all sources are covered under an NDA with PLX. We support these devices with a custom kernel that is flashed alongside the original kernel in flash memory. This is a safe and non-destructive process, and allows the devices to use all of the software in our repositories.

That seems to have done it!  Of course, the install is taking up 100% of my 1GB thumb drive (I have about 4.5MB free).  So I’ll be redoing this on a larger thumb drive when I find one.

Abandoned Debian, using Arch Linux ARM (ALARM) for OXNAS v3.1.10-13, then fully updated via pacman as of 10/13/2012.

Compiled radlib 2.12.0 and wview 5.20.2 after loading base-devel.

Hosting via apache and sqlite (LASP).

Update: restored back to PogoPlug kernel via:
